Heritage

Our heritage combines the histories of two organizations that merged on Jan. 1, 2002—Aid Association for Lutherans (AAL) and Lutheran Brotherhood (LB)—to form Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.

AAL was founded 100 years ago in Appleton, Wisconsin, and LB was founded 85 years ago in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The story of AAL is filled with drama—from its humble beginnings to its powerful impact today.
 
Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Heritage That drama is depicted in a stunning 1,600-square-foot exhibit area. "The AAL Gallery: Generations of Caring," shares the history and heart of AAL from turn-of-the-century Appleton, Wisconsin, to current day.

Through striking displays, historical memorabilia, audiovisual productions and hands-on interactives, the AAL Gallery leaves lasting thoughts and impressions of this organization.

 
Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Heritage The struggles of AAL's founders are depicted, as well as how the unique solution was finally reached for Lutherans who needed affordable life insurance.

The sights and sounds of a bygone era reflect the culture from which AAL emerged. The AAL Gallery shows how AAL grew—from early headquarters to advertising, product development to community impact.
